German Awards' Creator Local Man

A Newton-based organization will give out several awards in Berlin tonight to honor five non-Jewish Germans who have helped preserve Jewish history and culture in Germany. Arthur Obermayer, a Newton resident whose four grandparents were all German, created the Obermayer German Jewish History Awards five years ago. The awards, given in conjunction with the Berlin Parliament, come on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps. This year's recipients are being recognized for such services as arranging for sports exchanges between Germans and Israelis and installing brass markers in sidewalks at the former homes of Holocaust victims. - Matt Viser
